Now the region’s stunning landscape, fascinating history and cultural landmarks can be explored on guided cycle tours organised by a new adventure tours operator.
Northwest Adventure Tours offers eight different on and off-road tours in the Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo border areas to suit all abilities and interests.
These range from a leisurely cycle around the local area to a full-on customised adventure package.
Among the less demanding tours is the appealing Bike to Bath, starting in the picturesque seaside village of Strandhill and taking a gentle path around the beautiful Knocknarea mountain.
Along the way the tour passes Atlantic-washed Sligo Bay, Slieve League the highest sea cliffs in Europe, and the world famous Carrowmore ancient megalithic tombs.
And to ease tired muscles at the end of a day’s cycling, the tour finishes with the opportunity to enjoy a famous Celtic seaweed bath, Ireland´s indigenous spa therapy.
At the other end of the scale is the more challenging two-day camping tour, which takes in forest trails, country roads, mountain paths, lakeside routes and an overnight stay under canvas in the beautiful and secluded grounds of Annaghmore Estate.
Among the other tours on offer are a bike to boat tour, a coastal tour, night biking and customised package tours that include accommodation and a variety of adventure activities including fishing, diving and surfing.
Top of the range bikes and equipment are provided for every tour, along with picnics and evening meals and bus transfers where required.
The operator also offers a drop-off and collection bike hire service that is handy for cyclists that want to explore the area for themselves.
Representative William Britton says: “Whatever your needs, Northwest Adventure Tours can provide you with the trip of a lifetime.”
“We are qualified bike leaders and mountain bike coaches, so in addition to our normal tours we can also run lessons on technical terrain for the more adventurous.“
“Our tours pass through breathtakingly beautiful scenery steeped in history where there is something to see around every corner. It’s really the best way to see this part of Ireland.”
A number of hiking and walking tours are also offered by Northwest Adventure Tours offering something for all adventure enthusiasts.
