What do you see when you dream of Ireland?

Perhaps you are in the rugged hills of Connemara on the Wild Atlantic Way, where wild horses roam beneath brooding skies.

Maybe you are stepping back thousands of years to absorb the Irish culture and explore an island of ancient monuments, medieval castles and iconic round towers. 

Or are you tapping your toe to a jig in a traditional pub, tasting the salt-infused air on a golden beach, walking amid stunning mountain ranges warmed by a soft Irish sun? 

There are so many ways to fill your heart with Ireland. And although for now no-one can travel as we all stay home and keep safe, you can still be spellbound by some of the island’s magic in a new short film below. 

 

Featuring a specially written poem called ‘I will return’, the film captures the beauty of Ireland’s unspoilt landscape and the lyricism that has made the country a giant of the literary world, boasting four Nobel laureates.  

In the film, the camera ranges over a variety of landscapes from the craggy hills of the west to the gorgeous manicured gardens of the island’s grand estates, such as the magnificent Powerscourt in Ireland’s Ancient East. 

We see the 5,000-year-old Hill of Tara, once the seat of the high kings of Ireland, and Ireland’s most sacred site.

We fly over the remains of the stunning Early Christian monastic city of Glendalough and sail up to the wonderful Kylemore Abbey, considered to be Ireland’s most romantic building.

Castles and country lanes, mountain tops and quiet sheep-filled roads all speak of the enduring character of the island of Ireland while the poem recounts a heartfelt promise: “I will return into her arms”.

“Wandering lanes and rugged cliffs and fields laced with streams, will still be there after I awake, but for now they are in my dreams”, the poet says. So hold Ireland in your imagination and picture the days ahead when you can experience first-hand the island’s wondrous charm.
