Set in the west of Ireland, but filmed mostly around Belfast and the spectacular Causeway Coastal Route in Northern Ireland, Pixie stars Olivia Cooke in the title role alongside a cast featuring Ben Hardy, Daryl McCormack and Colm Meaney, plus a touch of Hollywood from Alec Baldwin.
Described as a trigger-happy comedy road movie, or an Irish spaghetti western, the plot centres around sparky Pixie O’Brien, who wants to avenge her mother’s death by masterminding a heist.
Pixie’s plans go awry and she finds herself being chased by gangsters across the wild Irish countryside. On the run with two young men (Hardy, McCormack) who are way out of their depth, Pixie has to pit her wits against everyone, taking on the patriarchy to claim the right to shape her own life.
With bickering henchmen and generous helpings of comic-book shoot-em-ups, Pixie is firmly rooted in the cinematic universe of Quentin Tarantino. But as the main characters road trip through stunning scenery, the light-hearted joyride illuminates Ireland’s landscapes at their best.
The camera work reveals gorgeous mountain landscapes, moody skies, lonely roads and beauty spots along the Causeway Coastal Route in County Antrim, where Game of Thrones® was shot. Striking visuals also light up the screen in scenes filmed at Tyrella Beach at the foot of the magnificent Mountains of Mourne in County Down and parts of County Mayo on the Wild Atlantic Way.
