Meet the Makers at Ireland’s famous Cliffs of Moher

The spectacular Cliffs of Moher in County Clare attract thousands of visitors every year to experience the breath-taking views over the Atlantic, cliff-top walks and local birdlife.

Stretching for 8km along Ireland’s stunning Wild Atlantic Way and rising to 214m at their highest point, the Cliffs of Moher are one of the island’s must-see sights.

Now there is even more reason to visit the UNESCO Global Geopark, with a new initiative that sees County Clare artisans exhibit their work in Meet the Maker events.

A number of such events have already taken place including the recent Cliffs of Moher and Clare Retail Expo at which Clare food producers and craftspeople showcased their produce and gave visitors the opportunity to chat with the makers.

Among the exhibitors at the Expo was the award-winning Burren Smokehouse, which produces sustainably sourced organic smoked salmon.

Artist Phillip Morrison is another maker who has exhibited at the cliffs. His work celebrates the culture and landscape of Ireland with strong colours and movement as the key signatures to his unique style of painting, He has an art gallery in the nearby seaside town of Lahinch, with a second gallery in Doolin.

Airmid Soaps has also taken part in a Meet the Maker event. Inspired by the landscape of the Burren, Airmid produces totally natural skincare products including ingredients such as raw honey and Atlantic seaweed.

More Meet the Maker events are planned for 2023.

Outside of the special Meet the Maker events, visitors can shop for local crafts at the Cliffs of Moher Craft and Gift Store, which offers products from 65 artisan producers of jewellery, ceramics, clothing, perfumes and cosmetics.

With a focus on sustainability, the gift shop features a number of eco-friendly Irish companies such as Palm Free Irish Soap, Irish Slate Crafts and Rachel Webb Ceramics.

Outside the visitor centre on Craftworkers’ Street there are six permanent shops offering an excellent retail experience.

Clifftops stocks Irish and locally designed knitwear and children’s clothing, and ethically-sourced goods from around the world.

Moher Music Shop sells Irish traditional music, musical instruments and music books while Irish T-Shirts design and print their own original Irish and Celtic designs by hand at their workshop.

Beautiful handmade clothing can be purchased in family-owned Nua, and handcrafted Celtic and contemporary jewellery is made at O’Dalaigh Jewellers.
