BEARA WAY
Beara Way is a 196km circuit of the southwestern Beara Peninsula. Brimming with archaeological and historical sites, the peninsula is shrouded in mystical legends. Shared by counties Kerry an Cork, stretching into the Atlantic Ocean. It remains one of the most unspoilt areas of the south west region, surrounded by a picturesque seacoast.
Along the route, you'll pass empty beaches and traditional fishing harbours, and after all that activity, wind your way down narrow roads that lead you right to the door of some of the country’s finest eateries.
Terrain consists of mainly quiet tarmac roads, bog roads, cliff and woodland paths and open moorland, some sections of which can be quite rough and remote. The total aggregate ascent is nearly 5300m over the whole route and includes some short but steep climbs. Availability of overnight accommodation is generally good along the route although some of the longer stretches between villages may require careful planning. A loop of the route circumnavigates Bere Island, and takes you (by an exciting trip on Ireland’s only cable-car) to sparsely inhabited Dursey Island.
SHEEPS HEAD
Sheep’s Head is tucked right into the southwestern corner of Ireland and is one of the most remote hiking spots on the Wild Atlantic Way, totalling 88km in length.
This isolated ridge juts out 21km into the fierce Atlantic coast and showcases short and long loops offering wild scenery, picturesque loughs and trails that pass through deserted famine settlements, lush farmland and heathered fields.
DOOLIN CLIFF WALK
Doolin Cliff Walk is a 20km coastal cliff path that leads you over the magnificent Cliffs of Moher. Rising to 214m, the views of the idyllic Aran Islands and scenic Galway Bay will take your breath away. Listen to the crashing waves and rolling surf below, but keep your eye on the track because this challenging and seaward trail is demanding and not for the faint-hearted!
The sea cliff walk will lead you to the intimate village of Doolin, world-famous for its traditional Irish music, craic and lively atmosphere. Truly one of Europe's best treks.
