May the Fourth Be With You on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way

New festival celebrates Star Wars Day in County Kerry

Lightsabers at the ready! It’s time to dive into Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way at its most galactic with a new, three-day ‘May the Fourth Be With You’ festival. Kicking off on Friday, May the 4th (the day when fans across the globe commemorate the Star Wars Universe), the festival will bring fans together to celebrate the galaxy far, far away with a host of fun events for all-ages taking place across the County Kerry villages of Ballyferriter, Portmagee, Ballinskelligs and Valentia Island.

Joining Star Wars enthusiasts all over the world in celebration of Star Wars Day, fans can enjoy outdoor drive-in movie screenings, guided film location walks, children’s workshops, a special céilí for Star Wars fans (fancy dress encouraged!) and more, all set against the breath-taking backdrop of the west Kerry coast, which featured in the latest movie installation, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The festival celebrates Star Wars Day and the links between County Kerry and the renowned movie franchise. Ireland’s Star Wars journey, which began in Portmagee, County Kerry in 2014, has spanned some 2,000kms of the Wild Atlantic Way – from the south-western Skellig islands to Ireland’s most northerly point, Malin Head.

The savage beauty of Skellig Michael, the legendary island off the coast of County Kerry, was introduced to the world when Rey finally tracked down the long-lost Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way was catapulted to global fame following the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, with Ireland’s dramatic coastal scenery wowing millions of Star Wars fans around the world in the box-office smash-hit.
